Teaching Teenagers Mathematics

In August 2024, Teach for Ukraine NGO partnered with Saga Education — a leading provider of math tutoring services in the United States — to run a four-week program called Do Math in Ukraine!. This program offered free online group tutoring sessions in English, aligned with the Ukrainian school curriculum, for students in grades 9–11. Classes were held twice a week, each lasting 90 minutes.

Within just one day, we received about 100 applications, reflecting a strong interest among students for such opportunities. The main selection criteria included: participants’ self-assessed English proficiency at B2 level or higher, achievements in mathematics, motivation for joining, and timely completion of a math diagnostic test.

In a short time, we were able to engage:

  • 6 math tutors
  • 26 participants

The sessions took place on the Saga platform, which helped students expand their skills in using digital math learning tools. In their applications, participants identified the topics they found most challenging, including “Inscribed and Circumscribed Figures,” “Quadratic Functions,” and “Trigonometric Equations.”

Here are some participant testimonials:

“The tutor was easy and comfortable to communicate with, gave individual attention to everyone, explained the material clearly, and created a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The tasks were presented in an engaging way. I liked that we reviewed each assignment, discussed mistakes, and went over the correct answers. The lessons were so interesting that I wanted to study even more. Thanks to these sessions, I grew to love math even more!”

“During the lessons, we reviewed a lot of forgotten material and solved all the questions that were unclear to me before. I’m very grateful for such a rich session and the wonderful opportunity to participate!”

Gifted children often possess exceptional abilities and talents, show high motivation to learn, are creative, and quickly grasp complex concepts. However, during the war, they frequently lose focus and motivation to study.

Our tutors are specialists who help students identify knowledge gaps, take responsibility for their learning journey, and independently achieve their goals. The method emphasizes developing learning skills, self-reliance, and communication abilities in the educational process.
