Yes. Before your mentoring wave, you’ll receive a list of groups to choose from, with:
– grade level
– number of students
– their self-assessed subject level
– preferred time slots
You choose one or two groups that match your availability and preferences.
Each session includes:
– an emotional check-in
– the main academic section
– development of soft skills
– reflection at the end
We aim to create a safe space where children feel seen and engaged through their interests and hobbies.
A subject map is a list of key topics students should know in each grade.
We focus on learning recovery, so a 9th grade student might work on 8th grade content.
Training happens before your mentoring wave in two options: weekday evenings or weekends. Sessions with your subject mentor are scheduled individually.
Typical schedule:
– Mon-Thu: 15:00-18:00
– Fri-Sat: 16:00-18:00
If your availability is limited, we’ll explore a personal arrangement.
You’ll take a subject test based on the school curriculum.
You can choose the grades you’re most confident in. You’ll also receive lesson materials and full support.
You need to score at least 70% on the practice test, especially important for language subjects.
You need to attend at least 70% of live (online) training, as it’s very practical.
The remaining 30% can be compensated by submitting written summaries.
Engagement is key, as we also observe your communication skills in action.
Many of our mentors live abroad, which we welcome! It adds to the diversity and experience shared with mentees.
The only restriction: you cannot live in russia or occupied Ukrainian territories.
The only real challenge may be the time zone difference. Typical mentoring hours are:

StudMentor is all about support. You’ll have a supermentor skilled in emotional support and a practicing teacher as your subject mentor.
You’ll attend weekly supervision sessions to resolve any questions or concerns. Sometimes, mentors or teachers will invite you to observe their sessions, too.
No. We manage all parent communications. You focus on quality time with students during sessions and chats. As part of our safety policy, mentors and parents do not share direct contact information. Chats are moderated for everyone’s security.
Yes! You can join future waves of StudMentor or apply to Teach for Ukraine through a simplified selection process.
There’s also a community chat with opportunities and vacancies during and after the program.
If you need to pause your participation, you can do so at any stage by notifying us 7 days in advance and completing your last lesson with your group.
But don’t rush, you’ll have a supermentor and team support. You’re not alone with your doubts.
Each mentor has a supermentor who provides emotional and process support.
You also have a subject mentor to help with teaching materials and academic questions.
Before starting with children, every mentor completes training, including the course “How to Become a Schoolchildren’s Mentor” by Teach for Ukraine on the Diia.Education platform.
During the program, you’ll receive individual supervision from a supermentor and subject mentor, not for checking or judgment, but to offer helpful feedback and support your professional growth in a safe space.
Each StudMentor receives a certificate from Teach for Ukraine and UNICEF outlining the competencies developed through:
– 24 hours of group-based practical training
– hours of direct teaching during your first mentoring wave
– hours of group and individual supervisions
Additionally, you can:
– request university credit for practice hours, subject to university approval
– receive a letter of recommendation from our team
The program is volunteer-based and does not offer financial compensation. As a mentor, you invest your time and willingness to support children, and in return, you receive:
– high-quality training with experienced experts
– a certificate from Teach for Ukraine, including a record of your hours
– branded merchandise as a gift
– an inspiring community of young people changing education in Ukraine
– a group training trip to the Carpathian Mountains for the most active mentors
– and most importantly, children whose futures and self-confidence have grown thanks to your support
