I had heard about this program for a long time — where someone from a profession completely unrelated to teaching comes into a school. I thought it might be something not very serious, because being a teacher isn’t just about knowledge, but also about the ability to share it, keep the class engaged, and build relationships with children. ThenI had the opportunity to visit Petrivsky Lyceum, which became a partner of Teach For Ukraine back in 2017, and talk to Teach For Ukraine fellows.

The first thing I learned is that prospective teachers not only undergo a rigorous selection process but also receive intensive training, including practical and methodological preparation.

There were six stages: submitting an application, having it reviewed, submitting a resume, attending an interview, and taking a thematic interview. Next came conducting a simulated lesson online, followed by the final stage of selection—an intensive Summer Institute. Training took place both online and offline. In addition to training, it included working with children and preparing and delivering lessons. For this purpose, the Summer Academy summer day camp recruits students in grades 5–11. For 10 days, they observe us—how we interact with children, how we present ourselves, and how we teach the material

Program participants receive a salary supplement at the school, plus assistance with housing in a specific location. But what do they talk about first? Above all, it’s the support from the school teachers, administration, and project mentors. Feeling a friendly shoulder nearby makes taking the first step much easier.

I had always wanted to go to school, but it was frightening to do it on my own, including because of financial concerns. Then I became acquainted with the program, and the puzzle fell into place. For me, it is both an opportunity to relocate, a chance to fulfill my dream, and, of course, a way to do something meaningful, because I care deeply about education.

The blog on Censor.NET provides more information about how the Teach For Ukraine Fellowship works, an example of partnership with a school, as well as feedback from program participants and a student who has already experienced the changes.
