In times of crisis, it’s easy to lose sight of long-term goals — like access to quality education. Yet by helping children catch up on missed learning, we are investing in Ukraine’s sustainable and peaceful future.
When I began working on the topic of learning loss at Teach For Ukraine NGO, my motivation was clear and deeply personal: to support children from frontline regions. I kept asking myself, “Am I doing enough?” Eventually, I resigned from my position as vice-rector at a university in Kyiv to focus fully on restoring education in war-affected and recently de-occupied communities.
In this op-ed for NV, Inna Stepants, project manager at Teach For Ukraine NGO, reflects on the impact of learning losses on all of us, the educational situation in Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, and what keeps her inspired in this work.
